Repair & Strengthening of Fire Damaged Structure
Secklow Gate Bridge, Milton Keynes
Client: Milton Keynes Council
Consultants: Mouchel
Principal Contractor: Birse Civils
Secklow Gate Bridge in Milton Keynes city centre carries a dual carriageway over the town’s the central shopping area. Beneath the bridge is an outdoor market, where a fire broke out in causing significant damage to structural elements of the bridge. The bridge was closed as a result.
Bridge repair and strengthening works were required to restore its structural integrity. The scope of works included concrete repair and the installation of carbon fibre reinforcement (CFRP) to the soffit of the bridge deck.
The fire-damaged concrete was removed using hydro-demolition and reinstated with sprayed concrete.
The CFRP product was bonded to the soffit of the deck in four layers, in accordance with the Client’s design.
As the bridge is located in the middle of a busy shopping precinct, stringent management of high risk activities, including safe zone barricades were required to protect members of the public.
