Wychavon District Council is planning to spend £800,000 to repair surfaces in a number of car parks over the next three years.
The Bromsgrove Advertiser reported the local authority conducted inspections at pay and display car parks in Droitwich, Pershore, Evesham and Broadway and determined they needed “essential” repairs.
Subsequently, it has committed itself to resurfacing the facilities, funding the work from the council’s reserves. It will also use ‘capital receipts’, which it has from selling its assets, to pay for the repair work.
The resurfacing work will begin at Droitwich High Street car park, which it deemed in most need of repairs. A ‘patchy’ surface at the 186-bay site will also be fixed to avoid pedestrians tripping and falling here.
Droitwich’s 32-bay car park on Friar Street, Pershore’s 279-bay short-and-long stay car parks at the Civic Centre, the hospital’s short-stay car park, and the council’s 242-bay long-stay car park will also be fixed urgently.
The local authority said the hospital’s facilities will be given “immediate” priority.
Following this, it will resurface the entire car park at Oat Street in Evesham and the ‘lower part’ of Droitwich’s Lido car park. It then intends to completely resurface the Broadway High Street car park, which would involve closing it to the public.
This comes after the council revealed plans to turn car parks in Evesham into the new development, Chapel Quarter. This space will be transformed into homes and apartments, as well as a walking route to the town centre. However, it noted a “comprehensive car parking strategy” needs to be established before this can happen.
