A section of the M6 will close to allow repairs to be made on a bridge near junction 21.
Those planning to drive southbound on the motorway between June 17h and 19th have been told to expect congestion, as two of the four lanes will be closed to roadworks. There will also be overnight closures, meaning no access to the southbound M6 from junction 21 will be allowed.
This is to enable engineers to carry out repairs to fix a defective bridge joint on Thelwall Viaduct.
A spokesperson for National Highways said: “A diversion for the two overnight carriageway closures will operate between junction 21a of the M6 at Croft Interchange and junction 19 of the M6 at Knutsford – via the eastbound M62, anti-clockwise M60, westbound M56 and southbound A556.”
It also reminded drivers to check traffic conditions before beginning their journeys and possibly choosing a different route to avoid traffic.
The planned work comes after emergency repairs had to take place in April, closing three of the four lanes. The temporary job enabled the bridge deck to continue expanding and contracting safely regardless of changes in weather, Manchester Evening News reported.
Although the emergency work avoided sudden lane closures at peak times, the problems with the bridge joint will be permanently fixed following the repairs next weekend.
The motorway will be closed between Friday June 17th at 2100 and Saturday June 18th at 0600 and again between 2100 Sunday June 19th and Monday June 20th at 0600.
